The Association exists to promote the interests and development of high ability students at the University of Minnesota. The Association’s purpose is premised on the belief that in addition to achieving excellent academic records within their field of study, Honors students should be actively engaged with both other academic departments at the University and with the community outside of the classroom. The Association strives to offer Honors students activities and programs that focus on Professional Development, Community Service, Social Development, and Academic Enrichment. The Association also serves as a liaison between Honors students and the University Honors Program faculty and staff.

All Honors students belong to the University Honors Student Association (UHSA). The UHP HSA Board represents the interest of all colleges. The HSA coordinates activities and events from year to year based on the interests of the current stduents. Some of the things Honors students have done in recent years include volunteer tutoring, at the U Hospital for children with long-term illnesses, pre-final marathon study sessions with faculty, teaching assistants and tutors, barbeques, organizing the campus-wide Darfur awareness program, "Rebuilding Darfur", ski trips, salsa dancing, Ultimate Frisbee tournaments, intramural soccer teams and more.
